About the Instructor
Mestre Salim
Mestre Salim has dedicated his professional life to empowering communities through wellness and cultural arts programs.
As a Mestre of Capoeira Angola, Salim has received the highest title granted to a practitioner outside of Brazil by the renowned Grand Mestre João Grande to whom he has been a disciple since 1995.
Salim resides in Nairobi Kenya, where he runs his group, Capoeira Angola Center Kibera. The group, which is located in Africa’s largest urban slum, is a part of the Inuka Cultural Center NGO of which Salim is the Co-founder. The organization uses Capoeira Angola, breaking, and an empowerment program for teen girls to impart critical life skills and expanded choices to youth in Kibera.
Salim is the founder of Mandinga Ancestral: Capoeira Angola and African Arts Festival. Initially established in Oakland, California, the festival has since taken on pioneering work on the continent of Africa. Two festivals have been conducted in Kenya and one was held in Angola. The festivals have included the presence of Mestres João Grande; Moraes; Jogo de Dentro; Cabelo; Marilene; Themba; Kojo; Bujao; and Kamau among numerous other Contra-Mestres and Professores.
In addition to his work in Capoeira Angola, Salim is the Co-director of Synergy Yoga, a registered Yoga Alliance school that offers international retreats; yoga teacher training; and Thai massage certifications. Be sure to also check out his Yoga workshop this Friday at Esquina!
